Western Montana has some of the most incredible views and hikes in the nation.
In fact, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard world-travelers tell me that the Bitterroot Valley is the most beautiful place in the world.
If you’ve ever been lucky enough to go there, you’ll understand what I mean.

From the mountain views and wildlife, to the quaint towns and friendly locals – the Bitterroot Valley is one of a kind and a must-see for all who enjoy the outdoors.
Outdoor recreation is what this place is made of, and there is no shortage of hiking trails, parks, river access, lakes, waterfalls, and everything a nature-lover dreams of.
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’re there now!
So now that you’ve made it to the valley… Where should you go?
That’s why I’m here today, to share with you the top 5 must see hiking trails in the Bitterroot Valley!
Fun fact: Montana is the home to nearly 2,300 different hiking trails that together span more than 15,000 miles!
1. Bear Creek Overlook

Located in Victor, Montana, this is a great trail to start getting comfortable in the forest.
With a steady incline from the trail head to the top, this hike offers ample shade, incredible views, and lots of local plants, flowers, trees, and more.
This is the perfect day hike to get up in the mountains and see some of the best views that Montana has to offer.
- Difficulty: Medium
- Trail Length: 2.5mi (5mi total)
- Elevation Gain: 1,160‘
- Kid Friendly: Yes
- Dog Friendly: Yes
2. Saint Mary Peak

Hiking to Saint Mary’s Peak is the perfect trek for avid mountaineers and those of you that love a challenge.
This rocky trail is located in Stevensville, Montana, and will knock your socks off between the breathtaking views, and the steep incline.
Being one of the most beautiful summits in the Valley, Mother Nature will make you work for this one – but the view is more than worth it.
- Difficulty: Hard
- Trail Length: 3.5mi (7mi total)
- Elevation Gain: 2,490′
- Kid Friendly: Yes
- Dog Friendly: Yes
3. Lake Como Loop

The Lake Como loop is a great family hike, in my opinion. It’s simple, relatively flat, and has lots of safe territory for young explorers.
This hike will take you in a full circle around the edge of the beautiful Lake Como, located in Darby, Montana. This hike is a long one, so I would suggest getting an early start!
One of the best parts of this hike takes you to the waterfall that keeps the lake supplied with water on the far west end. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a lunch break, and take a dip in the lake!
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Trail Length: 8mi total (or 6mi to the waterfall and back)
- Elevation Gain: 500′
- Kid Friendly: Yes
- Dog Friendly: Yes
4. Trapper Peak

Trapper peak is not for the faint of heart – or newbie hikers. This incredible mountain is located in Connor, Montana and boasts the title of the tallest peak in the valley at 10,157′!
The hiking journey will take you nearly 3,800′ in elevation gain to the top of the trail.
This is an adventure I would suggest for seasoned and experienced hikers. The trail can be rocky and steep in some areas, but the view from the peak is more than worth it.

- Trail Length: 4.05 mi (8.1mi total)
- Elevation Gain: 3,470′
- Kid Friendly: Yes
- Dog Friendly: Yes
5. Blodgett Canyon Overlook

Blodgett canyon overlook has got to be one of my personal favorites. It’s not too difficult, the views on the way up are to die for, and overall it is a fantastic hike.
This hike will give you the opportunity to explore a variety of local plants and trees, spot small wildlife and birds, and enjoy everything from fresh creeks, to deep forest terrain, and incredible views.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Trail Length: 1.4mi (2.8mi total)
- Elevation Gain: 520′
- Kid Friendly: Yes
- Dog Friendly: Yes
