If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent countless hours in the forest turning over every stick and leaf in sight in search of the notoriously well hidden morel mushroom.

It wasn’t until this year, I discovered that these sly little mushrooms do indeed also grow UNDER rocks.
As if I didn’t feel like I was missing SO many already!
On one of our scouting missions earlier this year, we found a small patch of blondes in a rocky area near the river.
I spotted one peeking out from behind a fallen leaf, and upon closer inspection I discovered two more growing alongside it – one of them squished completely underneath a rock!

I’m still kicking myself for not taking a photo with the rock still in place, but at least I got a couple with the funny flat side where it was being suppressed by the rock.
We found a couple more mushrooms about 20′ away from these ones, also growing amongst the rocks. We nearly walked past them since they blended into the rocky terrain so well!

My husband and I have been fortunate enough this year to have had a pretty fruitful season so far – and we’re just getting started!
Have you been mushroom hunting yet this year?
I’d love to hear about your favorite mushroom find in the comments below!
